Walt Disney World® Resort Myths, Are They Real?

Ever wondered if the stories and the myths you heard as a child, and even adulthood, hold up? We have all heard the stories, but the truth is sometimes not as exciting as the build u of excitment you get from hearing it for the first time. Take a look at a few Walt Disney World® Resort myths and see if your favorite stands up to the test of time.

MYTH: Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World® Resort can fold down during hurricanes.

As amazing as this sounds, unfortunately its not true. Disney imagineers are smart and designed the castle to withstand the conditions of Florida weather patterns. According to D23 “Walt Disney Imagineers took Florida’s weather into account when they designed and built the castle, which consists of concrete, steel, cement plaster, and fiberglass. The castle can withstand hurricane winds of up to about 90 miles an hour.” So unless a direct hit from a hurricane lands over the center of Orlando, the castle will be able to stand for years to come!

MYTH: Walt Disney is featured as one of the singing busts in the Haunted Mansion.

We all know this classic ride. Im sure you’ve seen the mustached broken necked statue and wondered…is that Disney? Unfortunately, no. The bust is a living memorial to a Disney vocal legend Disney and Mellomen performer Thurl Ravenscroft. Thurl is a Disney staple for voice acting from Tangaroa in the Enchanted Tiki room, Pirates of the Caribbean, and even did work as Tony the Tiger. As much as this myth would be “Grrrreeeaaat!”, its a ode to a late Disney legend who helped build the magical place it is today.

MYTH: Walt Disney is buried (or cryogenically frozen) somewhere in Walt Disney World® Resort

False This is perhaps the oldest Disney myth. Walt passed away in 1966, and was cremated two days after his death. Since Walt Disney World® Resort was not opened until 1971, it would not line up via time and place. Although it would have been perfect for his ashes to be buried somewhere in Walt Disney World, the truth is that they are located at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

MYTH: Walt Disney World® Resort never closes

As cool as this would be, its not true. Walt Disney World® Resort does its best to keep its doors open every day, it does have rare occasions when it closes due to inclement weather like hurricanes and other disasters. Walt Disney World is also not open 24 hours a day like most think, and does close later during special events like Extra Hours and Holiday Events.

Frighteningly Wonderful Experiences – Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights

Oh, Halloween! It’s that wonderful time of year again where visions of candy, costumes, and mischief spread throughout the area. Where kids and families walk around neighborhoods in hopes of filling sacks full of candy large enough to create stomach aches and last hopefully through the winter months. Just the thing dentist’s love.

However, there is also the other side of Halloween. The darker side. The side that most young ghouls dare not think about. The side that ripples your skin, twists your insides, and turns your blanket into a full suit of armor. This is the true meaning of Halloween and no one does it better than Universal Orlando Resorts Halloween Horror Nights.

This event is Orlando’s premier horror destination offering a plethora of haunted houses, scare zones, and access to attraction rides with lines under 20 minutes! AHHHHH! (Yes, you can actually ride Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts without waiting over an hour!) The event itself is always done to perfection. Upon entrance, you are greeted with the eerie sounds and dark atmosphere that starts to invoke the fight or flight aspect of everyone’s psyche.

Decorated from head to toe, the park is literally transformed and created into this bizarre evil vision of the Universal creative team’s mind. You will find many of the houses recreations of Universal’s movie projects like Saw, The Walking Dead, The Purge, and The Shining. There is also the more creatively inspired original creations that really open up your mind like Dead Waters, Scarecrow the Reaping, and the Hive. Each of these really showcase the level of creativity that Universal has as well as their ability to create new and inspiring ideas.

One thing to know about this event, is that it is POPULAR. Expect wait times of 45-90 minutes or more on most of the hauntedhouses. Getting to park as soon as the event opens ensures that you will be able to see a majority (3-4) of the houses. This can sometimes make planning your adventure more important that the actual experience. Universal does try to make it easier to get your blood boiling, by offering their RIP Tours which get you upfront access to ALL the houses plus the benefit of skipping the lines. This can be an expensive endeavor, but if you have a group of friends that are all horror thrill seekers, the benefit is unmatched. With guided tours, front of line access, and the feeling of a search party to navigate the night, you’re golden!

The first thing I always do when I arrive is head to the closest haunted house. I don’t usually care which one it is, I just want to get into the mood. After nearly escaping with my life in hand, I decided to traverse the area in hopes of keeping my nerves calm. Not happening! The areas between the houses are lined with amazing props, decorations, and of course chain saw wielding half pig men. Yup! Basically, anything you can think about from aliens to abominations, they are there. Ready to catch you at the most inappropriate time and scare you senseless. The mood is flawlessly done and really helps solidify the spirit of the holiday. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes, you will be running. You will also find street performances, concert stages, and shows the help alleviate the mood and give you a moment to breathe.

Each house that you stumble upon is themed perfectly to capture the mood. While the major blockbuster movies and shows offer very little to the imagination in terms of originality, I want to point out the other created haunted houses are amazing. One of my favorite houses this year was Dead Waters. It was themed as a sunken and abandoned Louisiana bayou ship that had the scare factor perfectly done. There were even points that created the illusion of going up when walking down. Really something to behold.

After countless hours (six be exact) of screams, chills, and fright, the night was ending and all I could think about is how amazing this experience was. The sheer magnitude of engineering that goes into making this event the huge success it is every year is astounding. You feel like you are entering into a scary movie and leave running for the car. I left a happy living man (or screaming boy) and can’t wait to plan my return next year to survive again!

runDisney – The First Timer Experience

Walt For some people, the act of believing that you can do something is just a daunting as the act itself. With fitness seemingly at the height of society, the belief and drive to be physically fit can be something that is better suited for a New Years resolution. But, with every will there is a way, and it seems Walt Disney World has found a way to make getting fit fun and exciting.

Starting this off, I’m not a person you would deem physically fit. Im an average “joe” living in Orlando that enjoys a good video game session and a movie over going to the gym. So, instead of going insane and signing up for a marathon or anything like that, I opted for the sensible 5K event. This way, I figured, I could at least walk it if I had too.

The event starts early, around 6 am, meaning you have to get up, and get up early! After waking up at an ungodly hour, I proceeded to drive to the EPCOT parking lot. The drive is easy and quiet, since most people are asleep, and the parking lot is empty meaning parking is not an issue (yay). What’s even better is if you purchase a package through select runDisney marathon providers, like Pegasus, transportation is no worry. These packages include race registration, resort hotel stay, and park tickets. These select resorts take care of the transportation and provide a hassle free experience.

The energy when you arrive is BUZZING. Being in the area alerts your body that something big and fun is about to happen. Everything is laid out in an easy manner that even the “Dopey-est” of dwarfs could figure out. Bright colors and corral gates illuminate the early morning sky which help alert your senses to the upcoming events and designated areas. If that’s not enough, their is also a DJ of sorts yelling out times, schedules, and information from a stage centered to the corral area.

After a bunch of excitement, that would awaken even the deepest of sleepwalkers, the event starts and the corral gates open one by one ushering out the hordes of runners. This is probably the most nerve wracking and dangerous part of the race. I personally felt like I was on a highway. My recommendation is just stay left if you are serious and stay right if you are just doing the causal stroll. The race path is laid out in a way that takes you through the park before it opens, and also around the back areas, allowing you to see your favorite parks in a whole new light.

Every mile is highlighted by a large mile marker board that shows you how far you have run and also how long it took you. For every mile marker you cross, there is a Disney character not far away that will pose for pictures. This is a great time to mention that you must maintain a 16 minutes mile average, whether you walk or run, to be able to cross the finish line. If not, the balloon ladies will place you on their bus, not allowing you to finish the race. So take that into consideration when thinking about stopping for a picture. I personally did not stop for pictures, since I was worried about making that 16 minute mile average.

The whole time I was involved in the marathon atmosphere, my attitude slowly changed. As previously stated, I’m not the active type, so the whole time I was starting to second guess myself and regretted signing up. But half way through, I have to admit, I started to enjoy it. Most people weren’t nasty, or mean, they were up lifting. Motivation seemed to be the word of the day. These people just want to see you finish. And THAT, right there, seemed to make the whole world of difference. It wasn’t just a run to the finish, it was a way to see people interact politely and professionally. I even witnessed people meeting for the first time from groups on Facebook, allowing them to make friends from across the world. Magic definitely seemed to be in the air.

After crossing the finish line, you are awarded your medal, a Powerade, and a snack box (best part). Taking a moment to gather your breath as the sun peaks through the clouds is a great feeling and amazing way to start your day. Now pumped and motivated to take on the day, I realized that it wasn’t the worst thing in the world, but perhaps, a great experience to remember. Now that the inspiration was starting to wear off, and the reality of the day started to creep back in, I remembered something… I still had to go to work 🙁
